Segregating a VSeeBox Streaming Device to an Untrusted Network

This guide outlines how to set up a separate, isolated Wi-Fi network for your  vSeeBox streaming devices while keeping your main home network secure. The steps focus on creating a dedicated “untrusted” network using a second router.

Why Create an Untrusted Network?

vSeeBox streaming devices connect to the internet and may run third-party apps or software. Placing them on a separate network prevents potential security risks from affecting your main devices such as computers, phones, or smart home systems.

Required Equipment

  • Existing Verizon home internet connection with router.

  • Second Wi-Fi router (any consumer-grade model with a WAN/Internet port).

  • One Ethernet cable.

Setup Steps

Step 1: Connect the Second Router

  1. Plug one end of the Ethernet cable into any LAN port on the Verizon router.

  2. Plug the other end into the WAN/Internet port on the second router.

Step 2: Configure the Second Router

  1. Power on the second router.

  2. Log in to its admin panel (usually by typing 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 in a browser).

  3. Set a different LAN IP range from your Verizon router:

    • Example: If Verizon router is 192.168.1.x, set second router to 192.168.2.x.

  4. Enable DHCP on the second router so it assigns IP addresses to connected devices.

  5. Create a unique SSID (e.g., Untrusted_WiFi) and password.

  6. Save settings and reboot.

Step 3: Isolate the Networks

  • The “Double NAT” created by using a second router automatically separates networks.

  • Optional: In the Verizon router admin panel, block the second router’s IP from accessing the main LAN.

Step 4: Connect VSeeBox Devices

  1. On each VSeeBox, go to the Wi-Fi settings.

  2. Select the new Untrusted_WiFi network.

  3. Enter the password.

Step 5: Test Isolation

  1. From a device on the untrusted network, try to access a shared folder or printer on the main network—it should fail.

  2. Confirm the VSeeBox can still stream content from the internet.

Best Practices

  • Use WPA2 or WPA3 encryption on the untrusted Wi-Fi.

  • Keep both routers’ firmware up to date.

  • Periodically change passwords for added security.

  • Only connect untrusted devices to the second router.

Troubleshooting

Problem: VSeeBox can’t connect to the internet.

  • Check Ethernet cable connection between routers.

  • Ensure the second router’s WAN is set to get an IP via DHCP.

Problem: Devices on untrusted network can access main network.

  • Verify different IP ranges are set.

  • Disable any “bridge mode” on the second router.

By following this guide, your  vSeeBox streaming devices will be on a completely separate, untrusted network, significantly reducing the risk of compromising your main home network.
